How to choose a futures trade copier: a 10-point checklist

By Aaron Lieberman, CEO · Reviewed by Aaron Lieberman, CEO · Updated Oct 26, 2026

The right futures trade copier is the one that keeps every account inside its prop firm’s rules when you’re not watching. Check six things first: where it runs (cloud, desktop or VPS), copy speed, platform support for Tradovate and NinjaTrader, per-account risk limits, a flatten-all switch, and pricing per connection, not per account.

This guide is for traders running several evaluations or funded accounts, or a personal account alongside prop accounts. A copier repeats orders from one leader account into follower accounts, scaled by a ratio you set.

Echo Trader is a cloud-based futures trade copier and trading journal for prop-firm traders.

What a futures trade copier does

A copier watches one leader account and repeats each order event — entries, exits, modifications, cancels and brackets — in your follower accounts, scaled by a trade ratio such as 1:1 or 2:1. It sits between your platform accounts. It doesn’t decide trades for you.

Trade copier vs the platform’s built-in group trading

Built-in group trading works inside one platform login. A standalone copier can span logins, firms and platforms, and can add per-account risk rules. Which fits depends on whether all your accounts sit under one login or across several firms.

The 10-point checklist

  1. 1. Where it runs: cloud vs desktop vs VPS

Desktop copiers stop when your PC sleeps, updates or loses Wi-Fi. A VPS keeps a desktop copier running but adds a monthly bill and another machine to maintain. Cloud copiers run on the vendor's servers, so nothing is installed.

Ask: “Does copying continue if my computer is off?”

Red flag: The copier needs your platform open.

  2. 2. Copy speed (latency)

Time from leader fill to follower order. Slower copies mean more slippage between accounts in fast markets.

Ask: “What's your average copy time, and how is it measured?”

Red flag: No published number, or “instant” with no definition.

  3. 3. Platform support

Does it connect the platforms your firms use? Tradovate and NinjaTrader cover most futures prop firms; others use Rithmic-based platforms or proprietary ones.

Ask: “Which platforms, and can one group span platforms?”

Red flag: Support depends on a plugin you have to install on each machine.

  4. 4. Per-follower risk controls

Separate daily and weekly loss and profit limits per account, and drawdown tracking, because a 50K evaluation and a 150K funded account have different limits.

Ask: “Can I set a different daily loss limit on each follower?”

    Red flag: One global limit.

  5. 5. Flatten-all and per-account flatten

One click to exit every account (or one) when something goes wrong.

Ask: “Can I flatten all followers from one screen, from my phone?”

Red flag: You must log into each account.

  6. 6. Order types and events

Market, limit, stop, brackets and OCO, modifications, partial fills and cancels should all copy.

Ask: “If I move my stop on the leader, does every follower update?”

    Red flag: Entries only.

  7. 7. Ratios and sizing

A per-follower ratio lets a small evaluation follow a bigger funded account, where the firm permits it.

Ask: “Can each follower have its own ratio?”

Red flag: One size for all followers.

  8. 8. Fit with your prop firm

A copier runs on top of your firm's accounts, so it has to fit the way your firm works — the platform (Tradovate, NinjaTrader), your account allocation and drawdown type. The copier doesn't change your firm's terms, so always read and follow them for your own accounts.

Ask: “Does the vendor connect to my firm's platform, and does it explain how it fits my accounts?”

Red flag: A vendor that claims to “work with every prop firm” without naming platforms or feeds.

Compare prop firms: allocation, drawdown and payouts

  9. 9. Pricing per connection vs per account

Per-account pricing gets expensive as you pass evaluations. Per-connection or unlimited-account plans scale better. Also check trials, annual pricing and cancellation.

Ask: “What happens to my price if I go from 5 to 15 accounts?”

Red flag: Price climbs with every account you add.

  10. 10. Journal and analytics

Copying is half of it. Auto-synced trades, P&L by account and time of day, plan and mistake tracking, and shareable proof of results help you spot what to fix.

Ask: “Are copied trades journaled automatically?”

Red flag: No record of what you traded.

How to copy trades across multiple prop firm accounts

  1. Review your firm's own terms before you build a group. Compare firms by allocation, drawdown and payouts at /prop-firms.
  2. Group accounts that make sense together — the same drawdown type where possible, so one set of limits fits them all.
  3. Pick the leader: usually the account with the tightest limits or the smallest size.
  4. Set each follower's ratio and its daily loss limit comfortably inside your firm's drawdown.
  5. Test with one micro contract, confirm every follower fills, then monitor every account in one view.

Where Echo Trader fits

Echo Trader is a cloud-based futures trade copier and trading journal for prop-firm traders. Here’s how it maps to the checklist:

  • Runs in the cloud: no VPS or desktop install, and copying continues when your computer is off. 99.99% uptime.
  • 60ms average copy speed.
  • Platforms: Tradovate and NinjaTrader, plus TradingView through a connected account. Rithmic support is coming (no dates).
  • Copier groups: one leader, unlimited followers, and a copy ratio per follower in 0.1 increments (e.g. 0.5x, 1.5x). Echo copies all order types.
  • Per-account risk: daily and weekly loss and profit limits plus drawdown tracking for every account; flatten one account or all of them.
  • Journal included: orders sync automatically. Add pre-market plans, a followed-plan toggle, a 1–5 confidence score, tags and screenshots, then see P&L by time of day, Echo Score and signed P&L certificates. CSV export covers up to 90 days.
  • Pricing per connection, not per account: Free (1 connection, journal and core metrics, no copier); Basic $49/mo or $499/yr (2 connections, unlimited accounts); Premium $99/mo or $999/yr (unlimited connections). Copier plans include a 7-day free trial, one per person.

Frequently asked questions

What is a futures trade copier?+
Software that repeats orders from one leader account in one or more follower accounts, usually with a size ratio and risk limits per account.
Do I need a VPS for a trade copier?+
Not with a cloud copier. Desktop copiers need your computer, or a VPS, running the whole session.
Cloud, desktop or VPS — which copier setup is best?+
A cloud copier keeps running when your computer is off, with no VPS to rent or maintain. Desktop copiers stop when your machine sleeps; a VPS fixes that but adds cost and setup. For prop-firm traders running several accounts, cloud is usually the least to go wrong.
What's the difference between Tradovate group trading and a trade copier?+
Group trading places orders across accounts inside one Tradovate login. A standalone copier can link different logins, firms and platforms, and adds per-account limits.
How fast should a trade copier be?+
Faster means less price difference between accounts. Ask for an average measured from leader fill to follower order. Echo's average is 60ms.
Can I copy trades between Tradovate and NinjaTrader?+
Yes. Echo can copy from a Tradovate leader to NinjaTrader followers and the other way round. Follow each firm's own terms for your accounts.
How much does a futures trade copier cost?+
Pricing is usually per account, per connection or a flat subscription. Model the cost at your future account count, not today's. Echo prices per connection with unlimited accounts.
